Fishers High School
This project fulfilled two purposes. It expanded the high school capacity by 1,000 students while also creating a separate academy which reflects the most innovative design for teaching and learning with accessible space for early college classes that provide actual college credits for high school students. This major addition is 2 stories and reflects the qualities of 21st Century Design with copious daylight, transparency of learning spaces, ubiquitous technology and flexible learning spaces that are sized for small and large group gatherings. There are an additional 45 teaching stations in the Academy. Teachers do not “own” their classroom space but have an office space available, similar to the arrangements in higher education. There is a Student Learning Commons adjacent to the student café with technology tables and opportunities for small group collaboration. The café will be open before and after school for students who choose to remain for extra-curricular participation or extended study. There are presentation rooms available and that are fully equipped with state of the art technology. There is one large open science lab for all of the disciplines as well as art labs that open to one another to provide a free flowing creative environment. In addition to the College and Career Academy, the district wanted to ensure that students would have more opportunities to participate in co and extra-curricular activities. Consequently, a new, larger band room was built and orchestra and choir spaces renovated. A multi-purpose field house with 3 basketball courts, an indoor track, additional physical education lockers and a weight room was also added to encourage participation and to provide ample instructional space for the additional 1,000 students.
