    Creating Harmony with the Site’s Natural, Desert Environment

    The architecture’s simple, utility-driven forms and warm, desert-inspired material palette expresses an equilibrium between the project’s technological objectives, internal functional requirements, and sustainability goals.

    Design Facilitates Function

    The mechanical equipment screen walls were very carefully designed for optimum function and aesthetic sensitivity to context, integrating high-end, metal-clad exterior acoustic panels with noise controlling ventilation louvers into a carefully detailed structural steel framework.

    A Purpose-Built Setting

    The new hospital goes beyond replacing an existing facility, offering an environment that supports practice, teaching, learning, and healing while elevating the quality of life for its community.

    Designed for Experience

    The result of a collaborative process with IU Health, project partners, and CSO, the new IU Health Bloomington Hospital provides a patient, family, physician and employee experience that is welcoming, intuitive, and serene. 

    CSO guided IU Health through a process for incorporating the work of regional artists.

    Connecting the facility with its surroundings, art installations underscore IU Health’s commitment to cultivating community pride while enhancing the emotional wellbeing of those served by the facility.

    Coordinating Finish, Form, and Art Into One Experience

    With the budget in mind, designers combined building elements, finishes, and art in the form of unique mosaics in public spaces. Each mosaic was custom-designed using artwork submitted by local artists.

    North West Residence Hall

    Well‑Planned Residential Living with Shared Amenities on Every Floor

    Each residential floor includes approximately 27 student rooms—primarily doubles—with shared bath facilities and a dedicated lounge and kitchen.

    Two‑Story Connector with Shared Facilities and Learning Environments

    A central connector between each tower houses shared facilities such as laundry, group study, lounge, fitness center, mail, and administrative office spaces. Included in this two-story connector is a large multi-purpose room for the community, as well as designated Living-Learning maker spaces for Education.

    Student Makerspace and Learning Resource Center

    The makerspace on the second floor of North West Residence Hall was created for students in education and humanities programs, with an open, flexible layout designed to support hands on learning and access to a wide range of equipment and technology.

    Tri-North Middle School

    A Central, Dynamic Student Commons

    In place of a standard cafeteria, a large student commons serves multiple purposes throughout the day as a gathering space for students before and after school, an event space, or an instructional space during school hours.

    Learning on Display

    STEM labs overlook the Student Commons with foldable glass doors that open up to connect the two spaces.

    Designed for Maximum Flexibility

    A multi-purpose performance / large group instruction space features retractable theater seating and padded athletic flooring, allowing the space to be used for overflow from the main gym, large student gatherings, or community events.

    Sustainability in Action

    Sustainable design is integrated throughout the building with features such as a solar array, geothermal heat pump system, locally-sourced Indiana limestone, low-E windows, and a digital display that allows students to track energy consumption in real time.
