“I liked that CSO Architects actually listened to us when we said that we did not want this building to look like a school. We wanted it to be unique. That’s when we started talking about studio space instead of classroom space.”

New Tech High School originated in Napa, California, and is a project-based learning curriculum that uses technology as its base for delivery. The concept has continued to emerge and is being replicated throughout the country. Representatives from CSO met with both Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) and the New Tech Foundation representatives to develop an understanding of the educational principles and then visited four sites in California to see the actual implementation of the curriculum. On their return, they again brainstormed with BCSC personnel to plan the transformation of a 40,000 square foot auto parts warehouse into a model New Tech High Campus. The design process was underway in November 2007, and the school was ready to open for its first class of students in August 2008. The school features one-to-one computers for each student and provides access to technology in every space.
