Central Middle School
In association with Perkins + Will, the firm was commissioned to design the new Central Middle School. The new school was built on the site of the existing school’s track and fields, allowing the existing school to continue functioning while construction takes place. The school’s function can generally be divided into private classroom components to the south, and public, shared components to the north, such as the gymnasium, performing arts and gathering spaces. The main entry of the building occurs along the western façade, developing into the lobby at the link between the public and private areas. Beyond the lobby is the multi-story volume of the Commons. This area acts as a cafeteria during school hours, a cultural hub for the students and a breakout space for the two gymnasium that are adjacent to the north during after hour events. The Media Center is also located at the intersection of the public and private areas on the second level, encouraging research and interaction.
