The upper level of the facility includes flight planning spaces, food service, and spaces to rest. Abundant natural lighting allows pilots to monitor current weather conditions. The facility is located directly in the path of flights arriving and departing from the Indianapolis International Airport. In order to ensure maximum sound proofing, 148 sleep rooms are located underground. Sleep rooms are organized into corridors, with sound proof doors separating each room and corridor from the rest of the facility. Everything from the wall construction and the ceiling design to the mechanical systems is designed to create a quiet, restful space for pilots.
The high-tech, state-of-the-art facility features wifi controlled lighting and electronic door locks and is ADA compliant. The new building will provide a restful place for pilots while increasing efficiency for FedEx. Pilots are currently sent to hotels to sleep, which is very costly and results in a lack of restful sleep.
